the joys of solitary ipod walks

Now that I've bought a new iPod (called Sofia), I can rejoice again at walking the streets alone at night. My first journey went from the train station to my digs. And what a journey it was! The volume cranked up, I was totally in a world of my own. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new album 'It's Blitz' was my companion. Great album, by the way. Very loud and energetic, and fun with lots of synths and loud guitars. Karen O rawks likes she's never rawked before. That's probably not true, but still... It makes me want to run over cars, and do backflips and sidekicks on them. When I crossed the Theaterplein, the big and epic horn (?) part in 'Skeletons' came on and totally blew me away. Music can do that? Fuckin' life-affirming! That's what I like most about music, those rare moments it touches your heart and moves you to tears (yes! I do realise I sound very corny). You never know when those moments are going to happen. I wish music was like that all the time. Or not, because that would totally nullify the value of those moments. Look at me getting all philosofic.

I ain't saying my goodbyes

As you might've noticed already, there isn't much activity on this blog anymore. Maybe it has something to do with me being busy with school / Indiestyle / having a social life / procrastinating and being lazy. Pick your own favourite excuse. This message is just to confirm your worries. I don't know when I'll write again. Might be next week. Or next month. Maybe next year. Just keep checking this blog on a daily basis and one day your heart will be filled with joy and happiness when you see a new message popping up on your screen. I'll promise it'll be a good one.

In the meantime, here's a little sop to keep you busy:

Daniel Johnston - True Love Will Find You In The End
So what if this guy can't sing or play his instrument. His songs are as honest as it gets. This tiny song clocks in at less than two minutes and is my favourite of him.

Bright Eyes - Lua
I've re-discovered this jam thanks to the excellent collaboration between Bright Eyes and Gillian Welch on Dark Was the Night, mother of all compils. Their voices fit exceptionally well together in this song. In the video below it's just the man and his guitar. Try to catch the lyrics, brilliant as usual.

Headless Heroes - Just Like Honey
This Jesus and Mary Chain cover is lifted to a different level thanks to the soothing voice of the wonderful Alela Diane. When her voice breaks a bit when she sings 'I'll be your plastic toy', I know one thing for certain: this is the kind of girl for whom men started wars in the Middle Ages. The song's about oral sex, in case you wondered. Great stopmotion video as well:

Slow Club - Me And You
Slow Club are pure pop heaven. Me And You is joyous and gleeful folk and would be a massive hit in a fair world. Now that I'm slowly picking up the basics of playing guitar myself (emphasis on slowly, rather than on picking up), this is the kind of band I want to play in. One day.
